The Story of Barabbas
Pontius Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them,
"You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion.
I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.
Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.
Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.
" With one voice they cried out, "Away with this man! Give us Barabbas!"
So the story is that a couple of former colleagues, Darick Dabish & Woody Brown, were hanging out in Stephen’s man cave over dinner, drinks and cigars. Stephen was getting philosophical about the biblical figure “Barabbas” when they both simultaneously looked at each other and said, “this’ll be a great name for a cigar-Barabbas!”
This is the story of Barabbas Stephen told Darick and Woody. Most people know Barabbas as the biblical figure that was freed and Christ went on to be crucified, but what most people don’t know is Barabbas was actually later crucified as a Christian martyr. He was a rebel and known as a physical specimen who killed many Roman guards and soldiers. Therefore after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, he continued on the path of killing as he had always done. Of course he was arrested and brought before Pontius Pilate, who was the Roman Governor of Judea that was responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Pilate promised Barabbas his freedom in return for completing a personal task. He told him after the death of his wife whom he adored he only had a niece left as a family member and wanted her back by his side. He believed that she had fled to follow Peter and the followers who were difficult to track because they would congregate in different caves outside town. So he wanted him to go undercover and find her. So in time he befriends Peter and the followers by attending the gatherings not knowingly it was a trap to arrest them all. Furthermore, he comes to find out Pilate has no niece as well. Pilate’s actions make Barabbas very angry and equally make him feel guilty as well about what had transpired. So he asks to meet Pilate privately. He tells Pilate that knows his late wife had had a vision about Christ and she had pleaded with him to free Jesus. So Barabbas has one last request from Pilate in relevance to wishes of Pilate’s late wife to exchange a life for a life; take his own life and free Peter’s. But of course, Peter declines the offer and a young follower instead is freed. And Barabbas as well as Saint Peter and many other followers are crucified as Christian martyrs.
